Former United defender named new Fed manager

-

Broughty Athletic have confirm that defender Jamie McCunnie has decided to take the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

McCunnie had initially been appointed as interim boss until the end of the season after Jim Finlayson relinquished the post at the end of January.

The former Dundee United and Ross County also had a spell in charge earlier in the campaign.

A statement on the club website read: “It was intended for Jamie to see out the remainder of the season but after some serious thought and meetings with the chairman and president he has now pledged his full commitment to the club by becoming manager in the longer term.

“The club is delighted Jamie has accepted the position after what has been a bit of a turbulent time as regards the manager’s position.”

Broughty president Sean Donaldson said he was “very happy” McCunnie has decided to commit himself at the Fed.

“We tried to get him to take the job at the start of the season but wanted to concentrate on playing rather than managing,” he said.

“He made it clear he would help in any way he could but felt he still had life in the old legs yet.

“When we approached him at the end of January into again taking charge temporarily we knew we had an opportunity to try and get him to take up the job permanently.

“He brings the best out in the players and is very committed, eager and disciplined and only wants what’s best for Broughty Athletic.

“The next few weeks will be a busy time for him, firstly by helping to secure our place in the Super League for next season, which we are on course to do, before then tying up some players who will be out of contract as well as the search for new players.”

Meanwhile the Beast from the East has devoured today’s junior football card.

East Region Secretary John Reilly confirmed all games scheduled for today will now be played next Saturday and fixtures allocated for March 10 will now be rescheduled.

Reilly said: “We felt that in the best interests of players, officials and supporters that this week’s fixture list should be cancelled.”

No junior games are being played in Scotland this weekend.
