Robertson was sure he would make grade

-

Former Dundee United star Andrew Robertson is adamant he never lost faith in his ability to make the grade at Liverpool despite a “frustrating” start to life with the Reds.

The 23-year-old, an £8 million signing from relegated Hull City last summer, was largely restricted to a watching brief in the opening weeks of the campaign, with boss Jurgen Klopp sticking with the experience of Alberto Moreno at left-back.

However, an ankle injury to the Spaniard in December saw Robertson drafted into the side and he has shown remarkable progress, starting 13 of the their last 14 English Premier League fixtures and earning rave reviews on his Champions League debut as Liverpool battered Porto 5-0.

“In the first couple of months I had a few games but it was a frustrating time,” said Robertson.

“Don’t get me wrong, in the first few months I felt like I was ready to play more than I did but Alberto (Moreno) was playing well and the team was winning so it was hard to argue.

“I just gave everything in training and after an unfortunate circumstance with Alberto getting injured, I got my chance. It took me a wee bit of time to get into the rhythm and get my confidence back. But since then I haven’t looked back.”

Robertson has become a firm fans’ favourite with the Kop, a relationship cemented when the sprinted across the Anfield turf to close down five separate Manchester City players during their 4-1 win over their champions-elect.

That became a viral hit on the internet and exemplifies the work ethic which the Pool faithful have lapped up.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to have that relationship with the fans,” he added. “To hear them singing your name, it gives you a wee bit of a lift. I’m grateful for how they have welcomed me.”
