More games fall victimtoweather

All SPFL league matches postponed this weekend as the “Beast” bites

There was a complete wipe-out of SPFL games this weekend.

Several matches had already been called of on Thursday, Dundee United’s and St Johnstone’s among them

By mid-morning yesterday Brechin’s Championship match at Inverness had been postponed due to safety advice, while the League 1 fixtures between Arbroath and Ayr United as well as Forfar and Raith (rearranged for Tuesday night) were called off because of snow.

It is the same story in League 2 with Montrose v Annan being postponed due to snow.

The full house was completed when Alloa and East Fife was postponed at around 3pm.

Brechin boss Darren Dods was relieved that common sense prevailed as far as his team’s trip to the Highlands was concerned – despite the fact that Caley Thistle were pushing for the fixture to go ahead.

Dods explained: “Our team bus was leaving from Perth as it always does, however I was not sure how I was going to get there. My car is snowed in and the street has had no traffic moving for days so I was not driving anywhere.

“I was going to walk from Corstorphine to Haymarket and get a train but they are off and any buses are running on erratic timetables.”

He added: “Managers can miss games however we might not have had a full team to take part. Our players come from Motherwell, Carluke, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife and Stirling and getting to Perth would have been difficult as a lot of them would have had to use the M80 which everyone has been told to stay off.

“I could not pick a team and basically I texted the players and said that if they made the bus they were getting a starting jersey.

“Inverness were pushing hard for the game to go ahead but I was against it.”

Meanwhile, East Fife manager Darren Young has expressed his disappointment at his side’s game with Alloa being called off.

Young said: “In terms of a football match we wanted the game to go on as we are in a good place after winning 2-0 against Albion Rovers last weekend.

“That was a good win with a goal coming through pushing Aaron Dunsmore further up the park and another coming from a move from the training ground that a few players were involved in.”

“It was good that Chris Duggan scored it as we wanted him back amongst the goals sooner rather than later.”

Young added: “I would imagine that Alloa would have been pleased to get the game on as well.

“They will have been disappointed at losing 1-0 to Stranraer last weekend and wanted to get going again.”
