Milne finishes sixth as Lelliot pips Guy to gold

-

Perth swimmer Stephen Milne finished a disappointing sixth in last night’s 400m freestyle final at the British National Swimming Championships in Edinburgh.

The world champion in the 4x200m relay was fourth in Thursday’s 100m final but might have expected to win a medal over the longer distance.

Milne qualified only sixth-quickest and failed to find any extra speed in the final, slipping from fourth at halfway to sixth at the finish as he came home almost nine seconds outside his personal best in a sluggish 3mins 54.87secs.

Sheffield’s Jay Lelliott took gold, pipping Olympian James Guy.

Guy, however, made amends by making it two golds in two days as the three-time world champion won the 50m butterfly.

The 22-year-old, fresh from his 200m butterfly success on Thursday, finished in 24.24 seconds to take gold ahead of Cameron Brooks-Clarke and Lewis Fraser.

Guy said: “There was a lot of hard racing there – I’m happy with how it’s gone.”

Elsewhere yesterday, Siobhan Marie O’Connor won gold in the women’s 200m individual medley and Lizzie Simmonds claimed the 200m backstroke title.

Scotland’s Lucy Hope took the 50m freestyle crown while Holly Hibbott and Chloe Tutton were crowned British champions in the 100m breaststroke and 800m freestyle respectively.

In the men’s events, James Wilby won the 200m breaststroke ahead of Commonwealth champion Ross Murdoch while Chris WalkerHebborn claimed the 100m backstroke title.
