Leask eyes key Scots role

Michael Leask is ready to play a leading role in Scotland’s World Cup qualification bid after scoring a career-best in Thursday’s narrow defeat to Ireland.

The Scots lost off the last ball but had been staring at humiliation when Leask joined George Munsey with the score on 60-6.

However, Leask shared in a record seventh wicket stand of 156 while notching his own highest international score of 91.

He said: “I think I’ve proved I can play a longer type of innings at this level and that I’m not just a blaster.

“It was my first time in the middle on the tour so it was very pleasing to play a part. Without the partnership from me and George the game would have been over very quickly.

“It took me a bit of time to get going which was only natural but once I got my rhythm things clicked into place and I really enjoyed myself.

“It’s just a pity I couldn’t go on and get three figures but I’m sure that’s something that will come and hopefully soon.”

Leask has in all probability played himself into the side to open the tournament against Afghanistan in Bulawayo tomorrow.

It could hardly be a tougher start for the Scots who have lost five of their last six 50-over encounters against an Afghan side who proved they mean business by beating favourites West Indies earlier in the week.

However, Leask believes Scotland have the players who can make their mark in a group which also includes hosts Zimbabwe, Hong Kong and UAE.

He added: “It was a shame we just missed out against Ireland but we have taken a lot out of the game.

“As well as showing we have depth to our batting and I think we showed we have a strong bowling hand as well with a battery of really good seamers.”
