Asda resorts to rationing as customers desperately try to stockpile

Supermarkets and stores across Fife are struggling to stock basic essentials as a number of roads remain closed.

With heavy snow continuing to fall, vital deliveries of bread and milk have been hampered and some of the smaller communities have been left with nothing for two days.

Fresh meat has also been in short supply in some places.

Asda in Kirkcaldy was rationing bread to three loaves per customer on Friday morning as people desperately tried to stock up ahead of this weekend’s forecast of further snow.

Dysart man Jonathan Watson said: “I trudged up the road to Asda this morning and it was like Christmas Eve in there, with people grabbing loaves. “There was no fresh milk at all.” A staff member at Sainsbury’s in Kirkcaldy described chaotic scenes, adding: “One delivery of bread and milk, all gone.”

The Coop on Castlandhill, Rosyth, pleaded with locals to stop phoning the store to ask about bread and milk.

In a Facebook post on the store’s behalf, Rosyth Community Council said: “They are receiving a continuous stream of calls.

“The store will post if they receive any deliveries.”

A similar situation was reported at supermarkets across the kingdom, with Tesco in Cardenden saying it could not guarantee a milk delivery.

“The driver is attempting to deliver to us but if conditions do not improve on the roads then unfortunately, he will need to return to his depot,” they said.

West Wemyss has been completely cut off by snow and local man Tom Adams said: “There’s nothing in West Wemyss.

“The Toll has a seven foot drift most of the way down and nothing has been moving for two days now.”

It’s not all bad news however, as community stores Nisa Local in Dysart and Leven have received their deliveries and have plenty of stock.

Other shopkeepers across Fife said they were expecting deliveries yesterday afternoon – as long as vans were able to get through.
