100 years ago

It is an open secret that the Food Controller wants to postpone the rationing of bread as long as he can, and to avoid it if possible. It should be recognised, however, that the country is entering upon its most difficult period, and that the position of our wheat and other food supplies will be somewhat acute for the next six weeks or so. This is the result of more bad weather in America, with the consequent congestion of railways, than of tonnage losses. Economy in bread consumptio­n is a vital need.

50 years ago

A last-minute reprieve may have saved the jobs of 19 men at the Largo Welding Company, Ltd, Methil. The company may not have to close down because of the offer of a loan. The reprieve came at the weekend – when the notices given to the men at the factory were due to expire. The premises of the Largo Welding Company in Wellesley Road, Methil, were hit hard by the January storms. Most of the factory roof was blown off, but they could not afford to move to other premises.

A Dundee man who started collecting toys almost by accident is now the proud owner of a treasure-trove of around 600 diecast cars, tractors and diggers. The number grows as demolition digger driver Dave Crabb finds new delights among boxes at auctions, markets and car boot sales. His collection has outgrown his home and has been moved to the house of a friend. Dave’s wife Sylvia is understand­ing about his hobby – she has around 600 dolls and stuffed toys herself!

Villagers are furious they could have to show identifica­tion to get to their own homes during a highprofil­e golf tournament in Kingsbarns. The closure of a road during the Ricoh Women’s British Open could see a checkpoint set up at the top of a residentia­l street. There is also anger that, at the height of the summer season, IMG sports marketing company wants to close part of the Fife Coastal Path and its traffic management plans would force visitors to walk half a mile to the popular beach.
