Murder squad detectives hope CCTV footage will help them piece together the final hours of a man found dead in Alyth.

The body of 26-year-old local man John Donachy was discovered in a house in Hazel Court by police around 10pm on Saturday.

A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death but the police are keen to establish the sequence of events leading up to the grim discovery.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Patrick from Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team said: “Officers will be continuing inquiries in Alyth over the coming days which will include undertaking searches of the local area, along with houseto-house and a review of CCTV.”

Police are knocking on doors in Alyth as murder squad detectives try to find out more about the final movements of a local man.

A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of John Donachy but police are keen to find out about the local man’s movements over the weekend.

The body of the 26-year-old was discovered by police at a house in the town’s Hazel Court at around 10pm on Saturday.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Patrick said officers would remain in Alyth for the coming days carrying out door to door inquiries while colleagues review CCTV footage.

This followed on from a search of the property and surrounding paths by white-suited and masked forensic officers on Sunday.

The normally quiet terraced street was in lockdown, with near neighbours requested to stay within their properties.

People who live in the vicinity said police had told them they were investigating a “serious” assault.

Some kind of normality had returned to Hazel Court yesterday but a police command unit and various vehicles were still stationed outside.

Uniformed officers were also outside the house at the centre of inquiries.

Family and friends took to social media to pay tribute to Mr Donachy, with one saying: “Thoughts with the family, taken far too young”.

The police appealed to the public to help them in their efforts to establish where Mr Donachy had been over the weekend.

Mr Patrick said: “John would have been known to members of the local community.

“I am appealing for anyone who saw John any time on Friday or Saturday to contact us as soon as possible with information about where they saw him and any other details they may have.

“John would have been wearing a dark-coloured jacket, dark trousers and green wellies.

“If anyone recalls seeing John in and around Alyth I would ask them to get in touch.

“Having the knowledge of where he was and approximate timings could be very useful to our investigation.”
