Couple found guilty of stealing safe must wait to be sentenced

-

A couple who were found guilty after trial of stealing a safe containing almost £49,000 will appear for sentence at Perth Sheriff Court on April 5.

Mark Green and Lisa Reid had raided the Angus home owned by her father to take the family’s life savings – all in £20 notes.

Green, 35, and Reid, 25, both of Croftangry Road in Kelty, had previously been found guilty after trial of stealing a safe and forcing it open to steal £48,700 in cash from a property in Angus on September 10 2016.

The court had heard family members were all left out of pocket, including a woman who lost £21,000, following the theft of the safe.

During the trial at Perth Sheriff Court, a jury had heard Green and Reid spent almost £23,000 of the stolen money on several items including clothing, footwear, furniture, games consoles, kitchen equipment and children’s toys.

Most were found still in their packaging by police who required to use a van to carry away the goods to storage at Forfar Police Station.

The trial had also heard that the pair had bought three cars with the money, including an Audi A4 and Ford Fiesta.

The couple then travelled to England where they spent £6,000 on a Nissan Juke.

Green and Reid also used the money to travel to Belgium.

Witnesses had told the trial not one penny had been returned to the family.

Yesterday, Sheriff Gillian Wade adjourned sentencing to obtain a psychological report on Reid.

She said: “I’d prefer to have all the information here before I sentence the accused.”
