Calcutta connection

-

The Abertay Historical Society’s next evening lecture takes place on March 14 when Lord Charles Bruce will speak on the subject of the Scottish Cemetery in Kolkata.

Scotland has long connections with the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) and the Bengal region, and in the 19th and 20th Centuries many from the Dundee area went to this part of India due to the jute trade.

The cemetery, which opened in 1820, is the resting place for a number of those migrants. Lord Bruce is chairman of the Kolkata Scottish Heritage Trust which is working to conserve the cemetery. He is a graduate of the Universities of St Andrews and Dundee.

The lecture is free to AHS members. Non-members are invited to attend, but are requested to consider making a small donation.

The lecture will take place in Lecture Theatre 2, the Dalhousie Building, University of Dundee. Doors open at 6pm with the lecture starting at 6.30pm. More information about this lecture may be obtained from the Society’s Secretary, Matthew Jarron, telephone 01382 384310, email museum@dundee.ac.uk
