MEN: Grove Menzieshill moved up to third in the first division with a comfortable win over fifth placed Edinburgh University. Menzieshill now look set to be in the top four – and probably third – having a game in hand and the advantage on goal difference over Western Wildcats who are fourth.
And the victory effectively puts Edinburgh University out of contention for the post league play-offs.
Grange, who played Dundee Wanderers three weeks ago, still lead the way, although Kelburne’s 4-1 win over Hillhead moved them to within a point of the leaders. Kelburne did not take the lead until late in the first half but extended their advantage to four before a late counter by Hillhead. Wanderers are seventh behind Clydesdale on goal difference, but with a game in hand. Avoiding seventh place must be Wanderers’ objective to escape the extended relegation play-off system. Two goals by Mike Robertson and one by Michael Berry were just not sufficient for Perthshire to earn a point against Watsonians.
The Division 2 title race seems to be between Watsonians and Gordonians but Carnegie made a great effort to stay in touch with their 6-1 win over Glasgow University. Harris remain at the foot of the table, having conceded three goals in the first half and four in the second to Falkirk.
As in their last outing two weeks ago, this Harris performance held some promise, although Falkirk were clearly the better team.
Harris so nearly scored two or three goals but that last vital part of their play let them down – but they would still have lost by a significant margin. This can be good experience for the younger players but having all players available would make such a difference.
