Tayside and Fife to continue to shiver

Mini beast from the east to loosen its icy grip slightly as the week progresses

- STEWART ALEXANDER

Tayside and Fife will continue to shiver through low temperatures early this week as the region recovers from the effects of the so-called mini beast from the east.

Although most of the area woke yesterday to a fresh covering of snow and bitterly cold temperatures, it escaped the chaos seen in other parts of the country.

A yellow warning for snow had been in place throughout the day, as flurries continued to fall.

The Met Office said a widespread frost this morning will give way to a warmer day, although temperatures will still struggle to reach more than 5C.

Elsewhere in the country, bitterly cold temperatures felt as low as minus 10C with some areas suffering through heavy snowfalls of between five and 25cm.

South- west England bore the brunt under the threat of an amber warning.

Residents of villages were warned they could find themselves cut off this morning if there is further heavy snow.

Forecasters said there is a risk of power cuts in “the worst combination of wind, cold temperatures and snow”.

Some flights to and from Scotland have been cancelled following snow south of the border.

Edinburgh Airport said that flights to and from Heathrow and Bristol, where the runway was closed yesterday morning, were affected.

Five arrivals and five departures were cancelled yesterday. Anyone travelling is advised to contact their airline.

In a tweet the airport said: “There have been a small number of cancellations today due to the weather.

“If you are due to fly today please contact your airline for the latest information on your flight.

“If you are travelling to the airport please leave extra time for your journey.”

As a precaution, Heathrow Airport “consolidated” yesterday’s flight schedule, moving passengers on to fewer flights.

A spokesman for Heathrow advised passengers to check their flight status with the airline before travelling to the airport.

North of the border a Met Office yellow warning of ice runs until 10am today.

It covers Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, the Highlands and Western Isles, southern Scotland and Strathclyde.

Over the weekend supermarket shelves were stripped bare as families in the south west and Wales began panic buying bread and milk amid fears they could be cut off.

Tesco, Lidl, Asda and other supermarkets said they were working desperately to get deliveries back on track after the snowfall left many roads impassible for lorries.

If you are due to fly today please contact your airline for the latest information on your flight. EDINBURGH AIRPORT
