Could it be Hatton?

-

“Researching Perth’s Kinnoull Church War Memorial, I came across a Royal Scots corporal whose family lived at Corsiehill Cottages,” writes a Craigie regular.

“The man concerned was Corporal David S. Mackay who died on October 12, 1917 and was buried near Ypres, scene of several battles.

“Before enlisting in 1915, David was a ploughman. He had eight brothers and sisters. Old cottages still exist on Corsiehill. I wonder if one was once the home of David Mackay.

“I also speculated on the name of the farm where he and probably his father and some of his brothers worked. Farms were labour-intensive in those days.

“The possible farm name exercised the minds of locals when I asked them if they knew it. They didn’t, but all this land belonged – probably still does – to the Earl of Kinnoull. We used to pay feu duty for our Kinnoull Hill house into the estate.

“The farms on the estate would have been run by tenant farmers and the best guess for the name of David Mackay’s workplace was Hatton Farm.

“There are five roads leading up to Kinnoull and Corsiehill from Perth – Muirhall Road, Manse Road, Mount Tabor Road, Bowerswell and Hatton Road. Hatton seems the most likely on that list to have been the name of the farm.

“Sir John Everett Millais, the artist, featured the round-shaped horse-mill from a local farm in one of his paintings now incorporated in Kinnoull Church’s Millais window. I wonder if that was part of the farm where David Mackay worked.

“Is there a local history expert out there who can enlighten me?”
