Weir expected more from ‘flat’ Forfar

-

Forfar failed to follow up their midweek win over Raith as they lost to the team that replaced Rovers at the top of League One.

It proved a comfortable 2-0 win for Ayr United.

Forfar manager Jim Weir said: “I thought we were flat . . . I had expected a wee bit more, although I had been worried at how much the win during the week had taken from us – probably more than I’d anticipated.

“The goal we lost was a poor one defensively but I was actually quite happy going in at half time just a goal down with the strong wind.

“In the second half we lacked energy in the final third. I don’t think we played high enough up the park, and when you are on top you have to put them under pressure.

“The injury to Travis was a blow to us and then our other centre half gets himself sent off which is a real blow, especially with just five games left.”

Weir had no complaints about the decision. however. “My first thoughts were it was a penalty and it was a sending off. I felt the referee got it right,” he said.

“I felt it was poor defending from Andy Munro and he should have done better.”

The Honest Men took the lead after nine minutes at Station Park when Michael Moffat cut in from the left and curled the ball in off the post.

Forfar had chances to level the game through Easton but he failed to find the target.

Ayr stopper Ruddy almost handed Forfar an equaliser three minutes after the break when he spilled Millar’s free-kick, but his defenders bailed him out as they cleared before Hilson got to the loose ball.

That let-off allowed Ayr to take control, and the three points were sealed with 10 minutes left when Andy Munro was sent off for bringing Shankland down inside the box and sub Craig Moore sent McCallum the wrong way from the spot.
