‘Benchmark’ as Blue Brazil win at last

-

Cowdenbeath got the ‘27 games without a win’ monkey off their back with a fine performance against Elgin, and manager Gary Bollan wants the standard maintained in their remaining games.

The Blue Brazil closed to within 12 points of Berwick Rangers in their bid to avoid the pyramid playoffs but must repeat this form in every game.

The match was dominated by a strong wind blowing down the park. With its help in the first-half the Blue Brazil were in charge, but visiting keeper Brett Long denied them with a series of good saves.

Elgin seemed to be holding the home side when, on 39 minutes, Robbie Buchanan took a Jordyn Sheerin pass and fired the hosts ahead from 12 yards.

Two minutes later Sheerin headed home from a Fraser Mullen corner.

Elgin pulled one back in 61 minutes with sub Shane Sutherland firing home a windassisted 25-yarder.

The home side did not panic and fine work by Sheerin set up David Cox, who tied things up from close range with six minutes left.

Bollan said: “It was something we have been threatening to produce for some weeks.

“Despite the strong wind we played some great football in the first-half and created so many really good chances.”

Looking ahead he said: “The lads have set the benchmark.

“They showed what they are capable of, and we need a whole lot more of that between now and the end of the season starting at Stenhousemuir on Tuesday.”

Elgin boss Gavin Price felt his side paid for a series of first-half errors, saying: “We knew we would have to work hard against the wind but we were careless on too many occasions and paid the penalty.”
