Dods annoyed as set-pieces sink Brechin

-

Championship basement club Brechin slipped to another defeat at Glebe Park as second-bottom Dumbarton brought themselves within touching distance of Inverness and Falkirk.

It was a fairly comfortable win for the visitors but City manager Darren Dods was concerned that all three goals his side conceded came from set-pieces.

“To lose three goals from straightforward set-pieces with three headers back across the goalmouth was obviously very disappointing,” he said.

“Going 3-1 down in the first half made it an uphill struggle but to give three goals away in the manner we did was very annoying.

“Being a centre-half myself made it even more frustrating because, at the end of the day, no matter how good the delivery is, the defender just has to win the ball and there are no excuses for not being able to do that.

“We battled on in the second half and could have reduced the deficit when we were awarded a penalty but unfortunately Kalvin Orsi struck it past the post.

“When things aren’t going well these things happen but we’ll just have to pick ourselves up and prepare for the visit of Dunfermline on Tuesday.”

The Sons grabbed the opening goal after just 11 minutes when Dimitri Froxylias swung in an inch-perfect corner for Andy Dowie who headed the ball back across the face of the goal for Calum Gallagher to nod past City keeper Paddy O’Neil.

The visitors doubled their lead 13 minutes later with an almost carbon copy of the opener when another Froxylias corner was headed down by Dowie and came off defender Sean Crighton before rolling into the net.

City gave themselves a fighting chance eight minutes before half-time when Craig Storie curled a superb free-kick well beyond the reach of Dumbarton keeper Scott Gallagher, but the Sons restored their two-goal advantage six minutes later when yet another corner from Froxylias was headed down by Dowie for Danny Handling and he made no mistake.

City battled back in the second half and had a great chance to reduce the deficit in the 71st minute after Crighton was fouled in the box but Orsi fired the spot-kick wide.
