Dens midfielder on Saints’ radar

Wright keen for talks with McGowan as contract nears an end

- ERIC NICOLSON

Dundee midfielder Paul McGowan is a transfer target of Tayside rivals St Johnstone, Courier Sport can reveal.

The former Celtic and St Mirren man is out of contract in the summer and it is understood Saints boss Tommy Wright is keen to talk to the 30-year-old to negotiate a summer move to McDiarmid Park.

McGowan is one of Dundee’s most important players and will be crucial to the Dark Blues’ hopes of staying in the top flight after returning from suspension at Pittodrie on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Darren O’Dea is confident that Dundee’s fortunes will take a turn for the better after the international break.

O’Dea, who was back in the team for the 1-0 defeat at Aberdeen, said: “You are always a couple of results from going one way or the other. This league is like that.

“You win a couple, you are comfortable; and then you lose a couple and you are right back in it.

“We are at a stage where we need a couple of results. We’re going to be going into the split with some important games to play.

“But before that, we have three massive games coming up after this break. We will get back to work and to get ready for Hearts.”

He added: “I genuinely don’t worry about the league.

“We have beaten Hearts and Rangers. We go into those games confident because we know how to play against them. We know how to win.

“We could be sitting here in a couple of weeks’ time feeling comfortable again. You just need to keep your head down, pick up as many points as possible and hopefully that will be enough.”
