Popular teacher, Robert Blyth, aged 91

Popular Dundee teacher Robert Blyth has died at the age of 91.

He was a talented goalkeeper, playing for a number of junior clubs, and had trials for Dundee United and Hearts.

He was also involved in schools football, helping to manage and nurture young talent, with some of his young charges going on to make profession­al careers from the game.

The son of a blacksmith, Mr Blyth was born at Cargill, Perthshire, before his family moved to Monifieth when he was a youngster.

He began his career as an apprentice engineerin­g draftsman at JF Low in Monifieth.

He went into teacher training, using the money he made as a goalkeeper to help put him through college.

He began teaching maths and technical in 1950 at Arbroath High before moving to Morgan Academy in the 1960s.

From there, he made the move to Craigie High School, where he was head of technical studies until his retirement.

Mr Blyth was a member of St Rules in Monifieth where he was fabric convener and a church elder for 50 years. He was also a member of the Air Training Corps.

He took up golf in 1953, and within four years he had become a low handicap player and a member of Carnoustie and Blairgowri­e golf clubs.

He met his wife Marguerite at a church hall dance in 1953.

The couple were married for 50 years until her death in 2013.

Mr Blyth is survived by son Alan, daughter-in-law Beth, and two grandchild­ren.

His funeral is today at Dundee Crematoriu­m for family and friends.
