Still a good idea

-

“As a founder member, I was sorry to hear that Broughty Ferry Development Trust had decided to fold,” emails Anya Lawrence. “The original idea was that BFDT would act as an umbrella group, working with other groups, to improve Broughty Ferry. An idea perhaps before its time. Working with other organisations, it did succeed in restoring the historic lampposts on Beach Crescent and providing information boards and access to the Fisherman’s Graveyard on Fisher Street.

“Its most ambitious idea was the proposal to build an earth-sheltered building on the Esplanade at the front of Castle Green to provide services on the beach including a café, changing rooms and community space.

“The innovative building would have been built into an earth bank so as not to detract from Broughty Ferry’s iconic castle. As such the idea was well received by local residents. Dundee City Council could not afford to build this building but there were various grants available. Applications were being progressed when, sadly, Dundee City Council decided they could not release the land for this purpose.

“I am delighted to see that Dundee City Council now intend to fund and build a similar building on the waterfront at Dundee as part of its urban beach. Previous plans for a pavilion there would undoubtedly have clashed with the integrity of the landscape beside the V&A.

“Broughty Ferry’s loss appears to be Dundee’s gain. But a good idea is a good idea and I am glad this innovative idea has not gone to waste.”
