A fatty phenomenon

-

Amoment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips. So goes the old dieters’ adage. And if any proof were needed of fat’s phenomenal sticking power look no further than the Mearns coastline.

There, curious lumps of white goo washing up on the shore have been identified as wartime lard, sent to the bottom of the ocean when a cargo ship was bombed in 1941.

Maybe not the tastiest reminder of a day at the seaside but it will be around long after your ice lolly has melted.
