High praise for school drink ban

-

Perthshire North MSP John Swinney has urged other schools to follow the example set by Blairgowrie High and introduce a ban on energy drinks.

The school has announced a blitz on caffeine-loaded drinks, as well as bottles of fizzy juice larger than 500ml.

Education Secretary Mr Swinney said it was taking bold steps to improve its pupils’ health.

“I am very pleased by the strong action that Blairgowrie High School has taken,” he said.

“It has been clear for some time that energy drinks have a negative effect on young people’s health, whilst also impacting on their ability to concentrate throughout the day.

“These new rules will ensure that students are healthier, more engaged and better prepared for the daily challenges of school life. I would strongly urge other schools within Perthshire North to follow Blairgowrie High School’s example.”

Blairgowrie High’s ban is the latest effort to limit energy drink consumption among children.

Recently, Tesco announced its Think 25 campaign, which bans the sale of energy drinks to customers under the age of 16. The policy follows similar moves by other supermarkets.

Other local schools that have banned caffeinated drinks include St John’s RC Academy and Perth Academy.

The Courier launched its Can It! campaign to encourage all schools to bin energy drinks.
