Campbell vows no repeat against Wasps

-

Arbroath boss Dick Campbell admits he was delighted with the response he received from his players in midweek as they took all three points at Albion Rovers.

The Lichties manager had been furious after his side threw away a twogoal lead last Saturday at Gayfield to lose 3-2 to Stranraer.

The team made amends with a late winner at Cliftonhill on Tuesday night to ensure that Arbroath travel to play Alloa this afternoon in third place in the League 1 table, two points ahead of the Wasps.

The game will be the last of seven matches in March, a month that started disastrously at the Indodrill when they went three goals behind in just 15 minutes to lose the game 5-3.

And the veteran boss has warned his players that if there is any repeat, they can forget about having Sunday off.

Reflecting on the win over Rovers, Campbell said: “The Stranraer game was nothing short of a nightmare.

“So I was looking for a response and I got one.

“I would have settled for a 1-1 draw which was reasonable and we would have still been in third place but we kept going right at the end and scored a great goal.

“It sent a clear message to everyone that they should never right us off.”

Campbell added: “We go to Alloa tomorrow and if there is a repeat performance from the last time we played them then the players will be in on Sunday, I can assure you.

“We gave them a three-goal start but at the end Jim Goodwin told me he had never wanted to hear a full-time whistle so much as when we came back to make it 5-3.

“However, we have wee problems with Tam O’Brien with his hamstring and Bobby Linn with his knee, while of course we are still without Steven Doris.” Dunfermline defender Lewis Martin admits he and his team-mates are playing for new contracts as well as a shot at promotion.

The Pars topped the Championship early in the campaign but now find themselves fifth going into this afternoon’s home clash with sixthplaced Queen of the South.

With Morton and Dundee United, immediately above them, playing each other, a victory would be enough to propel Allan Johnston’s side back into the top four with the finishing line in sight.

After eyeing the title in the autumn, the Fifers would now gladly accept a play-off place and, individually, Martin accepts the East End Park squad also have it all to play for.

He said: “I’m out of contract in the summer but I’ll just play to the end of the season and whatever happens will happen. Hopefully I can play as much as possible and do well.

“The majority of the players are out of contract and are playing for deals.

“I think that’s a good thing, because everybody will be trying hard and hopefully that can help us get into the play-offs.”
