The German Main Headquarte­rs reported yesterday afternoon: “Western Theatre of War – In local engagement­s on both sides of the Scarpe we broke into the foremost British positions and took several thousands of prisoners. Near and to the north of Albert the British continued their fruitless and costly counter-attacks. Between the Somme and the Arve we attacked again. We drove the enemy out of the old positions and out of the bravely-defended villages in a westerly direction.”

50 years ago

New salary scales for Scottish teachers will mean higher pay for those on low rates and smaller increases for those receiving the top scale. The 6.5% increase, which comes into effect on Monday, has been agreed by the Scottish Teachers’ Salaries Committee. A spokesman for the Scottish Education Department said: “The general awards to individual teachers will vary considerab­ly.” First and second-class honours graduates, who are on the highest scale will get an increase of 5%.

Increased charges at the Olympia Leisure Centre in Dundee will price older people out of their right to stay active, claims Tayside Age Concern officer Ian Borthwick. Mr Borthwick plans to seek a meeting with Dundee District Council over their plans to increase senior citizens’ charges at the centre following representa­tions from older people. “A great many use the Olympia Centre on a regular basis, some up to four of five times a week,” he said. “Some are plainly shocked by the level of increases.”

A heroic teenager helped pull his terrified brothers and sisters from their beds as they fled a petrol bomb attack on their home. Dayle Naylor suffered serious burns in his desperate bid to save the five youngsters, all of whom are aged under eight. As the 16-year-old remained in hospital, it emerged his family have been forced into temporary accommodat­ion after losing everything in the attack in Glenrothes. Dayle’s uncle, John Naylor, said they were traumatise­d by the event.
