World No 10 Goffin hits back to claim victory

-

Fourth seed David Goffin came from behind to make a winning start at the Barcelona Open with victory over Spanish wildcard Marcel Granollers.

The world No 10 from Belgium lost the first set and was then taken to a tie-break in the second before hitting back to win the second-round contest 4-6 7-6(7/2) 6-2 in two hours 23 minutes.

On an otherwise successful day for the Spaniards, eighth seed Roberto Bautista Agut and 12th seed Feliciano Lopez reached the third round with victories over Ivo Karlovic and Dusan Lajovic respectively.

Another home player, Roberto Carballes Baena, beat Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-2 6-4 in a firstround match to set up a clash with top seed and holder Rafael Nadal.

Qualifier Martin Klizan of Slovakia saw off Argentina’s Federico Delbonis 6-3 6-7 6-4 to book a date with Novak Djokovic.

Seventh seed Jan-Lennard Struff made progress at the Gazprom Hungarian Open in Budapest, beating qualifier Jurgen Zopp 2-6 6-4 7-5 in the first round.

Eighth seed Andreas Seppi beat fellow Italian Thomas Fabbiano 4-6 7-5 6-3.

● Maria Sharapova will drop out of the world’s top 50 after losing four matches in a row for only the second time in her career.

The five-time Grand Slam champion, 31, was beaten 3-6 7-6 (7-6) 6-4 by French world No 7 Caroline Garcia at the Stuttgart Open in Germany.

The Russian has not won a match since the Australian Open second round.

● The long-awaited initial results of the Independent Review of Integrity in Tennis will finally be made public today.

The panel was set up in February 2016 following allegations of corruption in the sport made by the BBC and BuzzFeed on the eve of that year’s Australian Open.

It was alleged leading players, including grand slam winners, were involved in suspected matchfixing and that evidence had been suppressed. Tennis officials strongly refuted claims there had been any cover-up but announced the setting up of the review and pledged all recommendations would be implemented.
