Drivers slammed as ‘disgusting’ for using cemetery as shortcut

-

Motorists are driving through a Perth graveyard in an attempt to avoid roadworks, say mourning relatives.

One woman said she saw two cars tailing one another at speed, one of which veered on to the grass to get round her while she was visiting the Wellshill Cemetery with her parents.

Trish Anderson said she was disgusted by the behaviour of drivers at the site.

She believes the motorists involved may have been driving through the cemetery to avoid roadworks being carried out on nearby Rannoch Road.

“I don’t go the cemetery regularly but I was close by and my family wanted to pay a visit,” she said.

“We entered from the Jeanfield Road side and a taxi went flying by on its way out as we headed in.

“My father takes a while to get out of the car and I’m glad he does as the taxi would have taken the door off.”

She said she and her parents spent a few minutes paying their respects at the grave they were visiting then headed back to the car.

“As I was moving the car, two vehicles came down the hill at a fair lick,” she said.

“One car was tailing the other very closely. They didn’t wait and one of them drove on to the grass to undertake me.

“Why would you want to do that in a cemetery? A cemetery is a place of respect and dignity.

“I couldn’t believe that I was cut up there by people who obviously have no patience. You should be going no more than 5mph – it’s disgusting.”

SNP councillor John Rebbeck said: “If access to visit loved ones is being abused, it is something that has to be looked at.”
