The Church of Scotland is being asked to consider replacing its hymn book in a bid to adapt to modern times. However, a church report today warned of the potential for “real danger” from an over-enthusiastic updating of the language of hymns. While acknowledging the church must address modern concerns, like the role of women, while preserving the richness of hymn language, it said there is no “failsafe” way of reconciling both. It pointed out there are possible pitfalls.
