Entrance lodge

-

“We noticed the recent feature in The Courier entitled ‘Spotlight On Glenalmond’ in which there is a photograph of the Post Office at Glenalmond and thought that you may be interested in the following details concerning the history of this building,” says Kate Dove, assistant librarian at Glenalmond College.

“The Post Office was originally built in 1863-64 as the entrance lodge to Glenalmond College. It was occupied by the Manciple and it housed the school shop until 1892.

“The first Manciple to live there was Thomas Arnold, who had been the warden’s butler. According to one source, the lodge was built by Keay, the village mason, although another source suggests it was constructed by J. L. Pearson. It is a two-storey gatehouse, the tall lower floor pierced by a Gothic pend.

“We do not know when the building was first used as a Post Office, but we do know that it was closed down as a Post Office in 1967 because most of its functions were by then available in Methven.

“When the lodge closed as a Post Office it was used to house the chef and his family. The entrance lodge is still used as staff accommodation today.”
