Council to consider warning signs
Plans for a new programme for vehicle-assisted signs (VAS) will be reported to Perth and Kinross Council next week.
The electronic road signs are used to warn drivers about their speed and accidents or other disruption ahead.
Members of the environment and infrastructure committee will be told on Wednesday about their implementation over the last two years.
In the last 12 months alone, 30 new VAS sites have been created across the region, many in response to requests from local residents who have raised concerns about road safety.
A further 10 sites have been upgraded and four temporary signs were made permanent following successful trials.
The report outlines proposals for new sites to be added to the network in the next two years.
It also suggests proposals to assess the effectiveness of VAS, including identifying the signs’ effects on driver behaviour and exploring whether alternative traffic calming measures are needed.
Councillor Angus Forbes, convener for environment and infrastructure, welcomed the expansion proposals.
He said: “VAS provides both a very clear message to motorists about safe driving and a level of reassurance for residents.
“Local communities are regularly asking for more of the signs and I am delighted that this administration has been able to deliver so many to date, as well as looking to install even more.”
