CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

More than 800 young athletes gathered for the Fife Primary Schools Cross-Country Championships at a sunny Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy. Scottish Schools champion Isla Thoms (Balmullo Primary) was the outstanding winner of the day leading after the opening 300 metres of the P7 girls’ race to enter the finishing straight of the 1.25-mile course 200m clear of the opposition. Ruby Russell (Freuchie) and Katie Duncan (Ceres) followed home taking silver and bronze medals, respectively. Dalgety Bay claimed team gold ahead of Duloch and Masterton.

The P7 boys’ race was a much closer affair, winner Caleb McLeod (Donisbristle) holding off the challenge of Alasdair Davidson (Commercial) and Evan Wilson (Masterton). The team medals also went to the west of Fife as Sinclairtown prevailed ahead of Donibristle and Dalgety Bay.

The P5/6 girls’ race was hotly contested until the final run-in with local Katie Sandilands (Kirkcaldy West) taking individual gold chased to the finish line by Araine Bailey (Aberdour) and Katie Thomson (Masterton). Masterton took team gold ahead of Kirkcaldy West and Dalgety Bay.

Struan Wilson struck yet more gold for Dunfermline school Masterton in the P5/6 boys’ race, while in second Archie Suttie led Anstruther to team gold, Michael Lafferty (Dalgety Bay) following in third.
