Mental health specialist hired

-

A specialist midwife to increase support for women’s mental health during and after pregnancy has been hired by NHS Tayside.

Justine Anderson will work alongside patients during and after their pregnancy to ensure they maintain good mental health.

The position will also increase mental health professionals’ awareness by providing expert advice about issues that may arise during and after birth.

Looking after the perinatal mental health of the women means they will receive help up to one year after their pregnancy.

It will also include pre-conception counselling for those trying for a baby.

Up to 20% of women develop an issue with their mental health during or within a year of their pregnancy.

The position will hope to prevent the onset and escalation of perinatal mental illnesses during this period, through early identification and trained professionals giving expert management.

Ms Anderson said: “In Tayside, women and their families are at the centre of our maternity service.

“Healthcare teams acknowledge the importance of supporting women’s physical and mental wellbeing throughout their pregnancy and after.

“This role will help recognise early identification of mental health challenges.”
