United eye Parkhead youngster

Dundee United are closing in on the signing of young Celtic full-back Sam Wardrop, Courier Sport understands.

The 20-year-old right-back has been capped four times at youth level for Scotland and spent last season on loan at Dumbarton.

He was part of a Sons team that drew 1-1 at Tannadice in September.

Wardrop featured in 27 games for Stephen Aitken’s side before an ankle injury ended his campaign in March.

Ironically, the skipper of the Celtic under-20 team would replace another Parkhead youngster, Anthony Ralston, who spent the second half of last season on loan with United.

United manager Csaba Laszlo, meanwhile, has shown faith in two of the club’s young players by offering them new deals.

Striker Logan Chalmers, 18, and 17-year-old midfielder Declan Glass have both agreed contracts that will keep them at Tannadice until May 2020.

Laszlo said: “I am happy to have Logan and Declan signed up.

“They are another two players who can make it as a Dundee United footballer.

“They both know the hard work starts now and if they apply themselves, show the correct desire and workrate, then they can enjoy good careers at Tannadice.”

Academy graduate Chalmers made his first-team debut last July and has played seven times and scored a late winner for United against Linfield in a 1-0 Irn-Bru Cup victory in October.

Glass joined the academy from Hutchinson Vale three years ago and signed his first professional contract last summer.

He made his first-team debut as a substitute in a 2-0 away win at Dumbarton in October and again played as a substitute in April’s 1-0 victory over St Mirren.
