Mixed emotions for ‘tired’ Farah after Great Run win

-

Britain’s Olympic and world 10,000m champion Mo Farah was full of mixed emotions after his first victory in the 10km Great Manchester Run yesterday.

The 10-time world and Olympic track champion continued his successful transition to road racing with a winning time of 28 minutes 27 seconds.

Ugandan Moses Kipsiro was a mere one second adrift while Abel Kirui, who came fourth in the London Marathon, was third in 28.52.

Farah said he was delighted with his return to racing but admitted he was ‘tired’.

He said: “Conditions were quite hot but it was good to get back after the London Marathon.

“The weather is nice and I always get great support from the people, showing we are stronger all together.

“I have great speed and I can use it at the end of races but I was tired. The big one will be the 2019 World Championships.”

Kenyan Joyciline Jepkosgei made an early bid to win the women’s race but on reaching the 5km marker was gradually hauled in by four-time winner, Ethiopian Turunesh Dibaba.

Dibaba came home in 31:08 with Jepkosgei following in 31.57. Kenyan Betsy Saina took third in 32.25.

Gemma Steel was the leading Briton in seventh in 33.29) while former Dundee Hawkhill athlete Lily Partridge overcame a fall at the start to finish eighth in 34.38.

Partridge now heads to Font Romeu to begin preparations for the European championships in Berlin later this summer.
