Royal wedding enchants world audience.

No honeymoon yet for newlywed royal couple who will attend Buckingham Palace garden party tomorrow

- TONY JONES

Newlyweds Harry and Meghan began their first day as a married couple yesterday after tying the knot on Saturday in an emotional wedding ceremony that captivated the nation.

After a day that saw the couple seal their union with a kiss, process through Windsor in a carriage and experience a moving wedding reception speech in their honour from the Prince of Wales, they left Windsor yesterday to travel home to take up royal duties.

Harry and Meghan exchanged vows in front of 600 guests including the Queen, more than 30 royals and famous faces like US chat show queen Oprah Winfrey, tennis champion Serena Williams, actor George Clooney and his barrister wife Amal Clooney, Sir Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham and actor Idris Elba.

The royal family expressed gratitude to all those who enjoyed the wedding, saying on the official Twitter account: “Thank you to everyone who came to Windsor and those who followed from around the UK, the Commonwealth, and the world today. Congratulations once again to the newly-married Duke and Duchess of Sussex. #royalwedding.”

The couple stayed at Windsor Castle on Saturday after an evening reception with 200 of their friends and family, hosted by Prince Charles.

Details of Prince Harry and Meghan’s honeymoon have yet to be confirmed.

But their first official engagement as a married couple will be a garden party at Buckingham Palace tomorrow.

Meanwhile reports revealed that guests celebrated the couple tying the knot by downing themed cocktails, eating upmarket fast food, watching a spectacular fireworks display and dancing to a celebrity DJ.

But the fun did not stop when Frogmore House closed it doors, as some guests are said to have staged an after party at top London hot spot Chiltern Firehouse.

Harry and Meghan arrived at the evening reception in a 1968 Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero that ran on electric power.

Guests dined on posh burgers among other dishes, with candyfloss on offer for those with a sweet tooth.

There was reportedly a cocktail on offer named When Harry Met Meghan, a reference to the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal.

Meanwhile, the royal wedding attracted a peak of more than 13 million viewers on BBC1 just after 1pm.

ITV’s audience peaked with

3.6 million viewer just after 2pm.

The combined average audience for BBC and ITV was around 11 million.

BBC’s coverage, led by Kirsty Young, Huw Edwards and Dermot O’Leary, attracted an average of 8.7 million viewers and a 63.9% share, between 9am and 2pm.

On ITV, coverage – which was fronted by Phillip Schofield and Julie Etchingham – averaged 2.5 million viewers and an 18.6% share between 9.25am and 3pm.

The five-minute audience peak on BBC1 is the biggest across all channels this year, the broadcaster said.

On BBC1, the FA Cup final averaged 6.7 million viewers and had a peak of 8.7 million.

Clean-up efforts were under way bright and early yesterday throughout Windsor as the town begins to recover from the big event.

Trucks and lorries lined the streets as caterers and international news networks started to leave the vicinity of Windsor Castle, while rubbish collectors moved in.

Elsewhere in Windsor, relatively few signs remained of the festivities, pomp and pageantry that went into staging the wedding, apart from innumerable Union flags still adorning the streets.

Naziq Hussain, manager at Esquires Coffee house, said: “Yesterday you couldn’t move here, but this morning it seems like a pretty average Sunday, except for the TV crews.

“There was an articulated lorry taking the barriers away when I got into work at seven, they were all taken down overnight.

“The place is really tidy, you wouldn’t think anything happened.

“The clean-up operation began very soon afterwards, it’s very well planned and executed.”

No matter one’s stance on the royal couple, it is hard to deny weekend wedding fever gripped the nation. From those held rapt by every facet of the day to cynics desperate to relay how little they cared, everyone had an opinion.

Like any couple in the public eye — and more than most — Harry and Meghan will suffer tribulations.

But for the moment they are blissfully happy and that is delightful to see.
