The Minister of Munitions is anxious that as far as possible the summer holidays for the industries of Scotland shall be held at the usual times and for the usual periods and that local custom be observed. These holiday periods are necessary for rest and for repairs. This latter term applies to the machinery and plants of the works which have been so strenuousl­y and continuous­ly employed. The stoppage is necessary also for overhaul and rearrangem­ents, in many cases in arrear.

50 years ago

A new chapter in Army history will open on July 1 when the Scottish Division, as it will be known, is born. Six days earlier, at Edinburgh Castle, it will be inaugurate­d and its flag flown for the first time. The Scottish Division will be made up of the 1st Battalions of seven great regiments drawn from the two Scottish infantry depots at Glencorse and Bridge of Don, and the 62nd Lowland Volunteers and the 51st Highland Volunteers. The seven regiments will each retain their identities.

If a hole-in-one is every golfer’s dream, retired Arbroath doctor Herbert Clark has fired himself into seventh heaven. Playing at Panmure, Barry, he stepped up to the 144-yard fifth and, with his favourite seven iron, added another ace to the six he has shot since 1966! A remarkable feat but golfers will go a deeper shade of green when they learn that Dr Clark’s wife, Janet, is hot on his heels with a tally of four holes-inone. The secret of the magical shot? “It’s pure luck,” said Dr Clark.

Author Val McDermid will be hoping to score a win with her 30th novel, which has been shortliste­d for a major crime-writing prize. The Scottish scribe is nominated for the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award alongside five of her contempora­ries. Last year,McDermidwo­ntheceremo­ny’s top prize as she was awarded the Outstandin­g Contributi­on to Crime Fiction. McDermid’s 2016 book Out Of Bounds, part of her Inspector Karen Pirie series, is up for the top crime gong.
