Walls old and new

-

“As one who was born and grew up in the area,” says a Craigie reader, “I must admit to being a bit sceptical, when the the idea of building a new wall along Riverside, Dundee, was first aired.

“‘Whit’s wrang wi’ the auld ane?’” I said, thinking that it was going to be replaced. Having just walked the ‘Coup’ length of the finished article, I take my hat off to the designers and, in particular, to those whose skills were involved in building the wall, leaving the ‘auld ane’ untouched.

“On that subject, can anyone help me with some information? Some 25 yards west of the rail bridge there is a flight of steps leading down to the river. This was the site of an open water swimming club during the 1930s and 40s.

“To the right of the break in the wall, a name – McCabe – has been engraved into the stone. What is the significance?”
