“It was interesting to read the recent piece about Halley’s Brae in Dundee,” says a Fife reader. “Although I was brought up in the east end of the city too, I always knew it as Wallace Brae,” he says.

“A friend of mine worked in Halley’s and she always maintained it was the happiest place she ever worked in. She worked in the office there and said that Mr Halley always wanted to be called by his Christian name. However, she could never bring herself to do that!

“I agree with your correspondent regarding the Frankenstein Steps – that’s not a term I ever heard used.”
