-

Water clarity is still exceptional at LAKE

OF MENTEITH, being 4m and the top areas are Lochend Kate’s Brae and Malling Shore with buzzers – when it is calm.

In the Scottish Police National Championship, Alan Hill was top rod with 32 fish. His boat partner Roddy McIntyre caught 22 for a total of 54 for the boat.

The pair finished first and second overall.

The 68 rods caught and released 477 fish giving a rod average of seven fish.

In the Scottish Club Championships 10 teams were trying to qualify for the three places in the semi-finals. In first place were Flybox B (Neil Wyllie, Stewart McCormack (11 fish) and Steven Connan. Second place was Stirling Castle and third was Ruthven FF.

In the second heat of the Menteith Fario Fly Boat League Craig Ingles was runaway winner with 20 fish.

In order to promote evening sessions on

LOCH LEVEN the owners have decided to run a special promotion for the rest of this season and reduce the price of all evening boats by £10.

The cost of a standard evening boat (two to three anglers) therefore falls from £40 to £30 and a single angler boat falls from £30 to £20.

It was not so very long ago that the majority of the fishing done on the loch was during the evening sessions and the day sessions were less popular.

The evening rise of trout was something that anglers wanted to be there for. Admittedly, in those days, huge hatches of fly were far more prevalent than they are nowadays but they are still occurring, if on a reduced and more localised scale and the trout still rise eagerly in response.

Nobody seems to know why the evening fly hatches are less prodigious than they were in the past perhaps it is a by product of the significant improvement in the water quality and overall health of Loch Leven. RESCOBIE LOCH is still fishing well with the improved weather. The Ladies of Invicta AC were here for a couple of days, taking 10 for 27lb 13oz on the firest day and five for 13lb 4oz 214 hours later.

Birkhill AC visited last Thursday evening with 12 rods and took one brownie for 4lb and eight rainbows for 24lb 10oz.

Arbroath AC were out on Sunday with 14 rods and returned two brownies for 8lb 8oz and 15 rainbows for 49lb.

The average weight of a rainbow coming out is just over 2lb 12oz and popular flies have been black and red buzzer, damsel and yellow dancer.

FRANDY FISHERY is on top form just now with bumper catches daily.

On the individual front Tam Melville and Jim Galloway, Blairgowrie, kept 10 weighing 26lb 4oz, Brian Hepburn and Alex Hamilton, Kelty, 10 at 22lb, Brian Thorne, Crook of Devon, and Alastair MacMillan, Comrie, five weighing 11lb 8oz.

Dave Gonsales and Jim Watson, Auchtermuchty, took 10 for 26lb and released a further three, Sam McFarlane and Alastair Murphy from Rowbank kept 10 weighing 23lb 8oz and released eight.
