Guides yesterday ended a 70-yearold pledge to do their duty to God, in a bid to give the movement a more modern outlook. The new promise, announced by Princess Margaret, says: “I promise that I will do my best to love my God, to serve the Queen and my country, to help other people and to keep the Guide law.” The debate began in 1991 when 10-year-old Abigail Wright, from Perranporth, Cornwall, was prevented from joining the Guides because she was not sure about God.
