Neil claims Monikie title in gusty winds

-

Water clarity is still excellent at

MONIKIE, as is the sport. Fish have been taking a variety of methods, in particular the dry fly even during the day.

The club championship was held on the Island Pond with a full turn-out for a highly competitive competition fished in gusty winds.

Neil Anderson (Forfar) took top spot with two fish for 3lb 11oz and returned five for a total notional weigh-in of 13lb 11oz.

Kenny Dickson was a close second and Aaron Philip third.

The winner had five rainbows fishing a DI 5 sweep line with a buzzer between boobies, and two on a floating line with hare’s ear CDC.

Last week saw 37 boats (58 rods) on the Island Pond keeping 143 fish for 302lb and returning 81 with 26 boats (46 rods) in the evening keeping 90 for 180lb and returning 39.

The North Pond saw five boats (seven rods) keep 10 fish for 21lb, returning three.

Island Pond returns included: J Miller, returned approx 20 fish; Ken Giblin and B McLellan, 10 for 21lb 9oz; P Moir and M Smith, 10 fish for 20lb 5oz, five returned; R and R McCleary, 10 for 23lb 4oz, 15 returned; bailiffs D Inglis and T McKay, four for 9lb 1oz and returned 15.

Clubs included: Perth SC, 10 rods on Island Pond, kept 40 fish for 81lb 8oz; Perth Anglers, six rods, Island Pond, 12 for 28lb 2oz.

Successful lines and patterns include floating, intermediate and midge tip lines teamed with dry hawthorn, brown dry sedge, black hopper, nymphs, diawl bach, Kate McLaren, black pennell, green pea and yellow dancer.

The last of the National heats was held at LAKE OF

MENTEITH with the top 23 qualifying for the semi-finals from the 46 competitors.

Fraser Robertson of Canmore AC, Forfar, was top rod with 17 fish in a total haul of 241 trout. He was fishing a candy booby and buzzers on a floating line at the Rookery and the Plantation.

Ben Robertson of Gilmerton FFC was second with 14 fish and Paul Garner of Alba Orvie FF third with 11.

With temperatures on the rise at FORBES OF KINGENNIE, fishing has improved, although the ponds would benefit from rain, reports Grant Ostler.

Killin AC fished on the Boathouse and Burnside pools. Most managed the three-fish limit with the best total being 11lb.

On the Boathouse Mr Hogg returned 17 fish on catch and release, while Mr McAndrew took four fish for 14lb and Mr Cameron had three for 8lb.

Dries and buzzers (black or olive) were the preferred options.

The Burnside was moody but Robert Gibson and Ed Valentine found the answers to return 12 fish each. Buzzers and squirmies were among the better options.

Water levels are falling on the Bankside but Bradie Heggie enjoyed an evening session which saw nine returned.

Freelined buzzers took most of the fish but locating the shoals seemed to be more important than fly selection.

Powerbait was again the preferred option on the any legal method pool, the Woodside. However, spinning also had some success. On Monday seven anglers took 15 fish for 30lb.

LINTRATHEN LOCH is hosting the East of Scotland pairs on Saturday June 9.

The competition is open to all. Entry is £44 a pair with a start time of 5.30pm and can be secured on 01575 560327.
