A-listed house with Bonnie Prince Charlie link vandalised

-

Vandals have smashed vintage glass at a mansion where Bonnie Prince Charlie had his headquarters.

Intruders targeted historic Bannockburn House, near Stirling, twice in less than 10 days, shattering 34 window panes on the upper floors.

The A-listed property, where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed before and after the Battle of Culloden, was purchased in a community buyout last year and is being tidied prior to renovation.

The windows are now boarded up, awaiting replacement.

Local councillor Alasdair MacPherson said yesterday: “It’s heartbreaking to witness. The glass that has been broken is virtually irreplaceable, as it would have been fitted when the windows were made.

“I sincerely hope the police apprehend those responsible for this mindless vandalism.”

Last year almost 4,000 visitors passed through the doors of the property, which is now awaiting renovation.

Anne Mitchell of Bannockburn House Trust said: “There are no artefacts within the house at the moment, but quite a few windows have been smashed. It’s a bit disheartening.”

The incident occurred between May 20 and 21, then again on Tuesday May 29. Police say they do not have a description of any suspects and asked anyone with information to call them.
