Accountant tees up golf challenge on Isle of Arran

Charity: Aim is to play all 93 holes on island’s seven courses in 24 hours

- Gordon Bannerman

Perth accountant Sandy Fyfe is teeingup a daunting charity golf challenge.

Along with three friends, he is planning to play all 93 holes on Arran’s seven golf courses within 24 hours.

They’ll set their alarms for a 4am teetime on June 16 and be ready to tackle everything from hilly fairways to blisters, sore backs and the infamous midgies.

Mr Fyfe is being joined by former Perth man Dave Kerr, Graeme Cullen and Bill Kennedy who are raising money for Glasgow Children’s Hospital and Home Link Family Support, Edinburgh.

“We are four lapsed athletes so this is going to be quite a test,” said Mr Fyfe, a partner with Morris and Young.

We’re calling this The Iron Man of Arran Challenge. We have been getting a few games of golf but I don’t think anything can prepare us for playing 93 holes. My daughter Tallie was hospitalised in Yorkhill when she was only 10 months. Worrying times for us but the staff were wonderful. Following two heart operations, I’m delighted to say she has never looked back and Tallie is now a fit teenager who loves playing hockey. I felt it was time to give something back.”

Mr Kerr is chairman of Home Link Family Support, a charity giving children and families a positive start in life by providing support in their homes.

The Arran challenge fundraiser has been boosted by Pete Craigon at Morton Golf Holidays. Mr Craigon, from Auchterarder, secured a number of tee times at Crail, Royal Dornoch and Prestwick, along with a package generously donated by the Old Course Hotel at St Andrews.

These went under the hammer online, helping push the sum raised beyond the £6,000 mark.
