Caring Courier Country citizens receive awards

Former teacher Carol McGregor, the mother of Trainspott­ing star Ewan, has been made an MBE for her services to charity.

The 73-year-old has been a strong supporter of Rachel House, the Kinross hospice run by Chas. Over the years, she has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for the organisati­on.

Brigadier Melville Jameson, the Lord-Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross, has been made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. Following a distinguis­hed military career, Brigadier Jameson settled in Perthshire with his wife Sarah. He was appointed the local representa­tive of the Crown in 2006.

Ian Jardine, who recently stood down as chief executive of Scottish Natural Heritage after 15 years, has become an OBE for services to the environmen­t.

Mr Jardine, from Bridge of Earn, has taken up a new role with the Scottish Government as a national adviser on environmen­t policy.

Professor Andrew Calder, from Strathtay, has been honoured for his work as chairman of Tenovus Scotland and Scotland’s Churches Trust. He has been made an MBE for his services to obstetrics and gynaecolog­y.

Frederick Young, from Kinross, becomes an MBE for his services to Stem (science, technology, engineerin­g and maths) education in Scotland. He was previously chief executive of the Scottish Schools Education Research Centre, based in Dunfermlin­e.

Anne Pack, from Inchture, will receive a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to agricultur­al research, Scottish culture and charity. She is personal assistant to the chief executive of the James Hutton Institute.

Mairi Philp, from Crieff, will also get a BEM for her work with the community in Comrie. The retired district nurse is heavily involved in groups and church organisati­ons.

Laurie Matthew, who founded the Dundee charity 18 and Under to help survivors of sexual abuse, has been awarded an OBE for her services to charity. She said: “I am really quite humbled – it is quite an honour.”

Professor Robert Steele, a senior research professor at Dundee University, has been awarded a CBE for services to public health.

Professor Steele led the UK pilot that was used to inform the decision to introduce national screening programmes for colorectal cancer.

Hilary Anne Wiggans, Tayside regional in-court adviser for Dundee Citizens Advice Bureau, has been awarded an MBE for services to justice and the Dundee community. She assists unrepresen­ted litigants through the civil court process.

Cupar woman Moira Henderson, 58, owner of The Rings – a building with specialist equipment – has been awarded an MBE for service to accessible tourism in Fife.

Alistair Newton, 75, from St Andrews, has been awarded an MBE for services to people with neurologic­al illnesses, particular­ly dystonia.

Marilyn Livingston­e, director of the Adam Smith Global Foundation and chairwoman of the Cottage Family Centre, has been awarded an MBE to services to the community in Kirkcaldy.

The former councillor and MSP has been involved in anti-poverty work with the Cottage for more than 30 years.

Gillian Barclay, head of the Scottish Government’s dementia innovation team, has been awarded an MBE for services to dementia care and public safety. Ms Barclay, from Inverkeith­ing, has campaigned to prevent drownings since her 18-yearold son Cameron Lancaster drowned at Prestonhil­l Quarry in 2014.

Services to the elderly in the Mearns area have been recognised with the award of the BEM to Joy Adams.

Mrs Adams, of Stonehaven, gives up her free time as a volunteer at the Edenholme Care Home in the town.

Alexander Derek Scott, honorary president of Angus, Fife and Perthshire, Royal British Legion Scotland, also received a BEM, given to Mr Scott for voluntary service to ex-service personnel in Arbroath.

Catherine Ferrie, director of curriculum at Dundee and Angus College, received an MBE. The accolade was given to Miss Ferrie for services to further education in Arbroath.
