Gamboa out-of-favour at Celtic – but ready to shine in Russia
Celtic defender Cristian Gamboa may have been a bit-part figure during the Hoops’ latest treble triumph but he’s hoping to play a major role in Costa Rica’s World Cup bid.
The right-back made just three appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side as they made history by claiming a second straight domestic clean sweep.
But that did not stop the 28-year-old feeling part of Celtic’s celebrations as they wrapped up another impressive campaign at Parkhead.
Gamboa’s lack of match action for his club side has not harmed his international prospects as he started Costa Rica’s 3-0 win over Northern Ireland before playing 72 minutes in the friendly against England last week.
Now he is ready to step up again when they kick-off their Russia 2018 campaign against Serbia on Saturday.
“Every time I get a chance to play for Celtic, I feel I do well, so I know how important it is to always be prepared,” he said.
“I want to perform for the national team. It’s always a goal of mine to go to the World Cup and it is such a big achievement to play in one.
“Right now, I just want to play, be fit and be ready for the national team and for Celtic when the season starts.
“If the team need me in a game, I always make sure I am ready.
“It was amazing to be part of another treble for Celtic. It was a big achievement in the career of everyone at Celtic and I hope to have more achievements at the World Cup.”
