DAVID LEADS FROM

START TO FINISH

David McLure (Kilmarnock H.), fourth in the recent UK 100km Championships, went a good way further leading the 95-mile West Highland Way Race from start to finish.

McLure covered the hilly route (14,000ft) from Milngavie to Fort William in 16 hours 24 minutes 14 seconds, eighteen minutes clear of runner-up Tomas Kacmarcik (Inov-8 Czech & Slovak Team) 16:42.48. Nicola Adams Hendry (Garscube) claimed the female award overhauling previous winner Glasgow-based America ultra-runner, Jamie Aarons. Hendry 7th overall, clocked 17:55.41 forty minutes clear of Aarons, 8th overall.

It was an eventful race for Fife AC’s Sophie Mullins, the 2016 Scottish 100km champion, making her debut over this course. Following the Kinlochleven 70-mile checkpoint Mullins suffered a bad fall on to rocks sustaining cuts and badly bruised ribs. St Andrews physio Jez Tomlinson was on hand, however, to patch up the gutsy runner who went on to place 18th overall, third woman in 19:41.32. Over 40 veteran club colleague Martin Bell, Newburgh, excelled to place 10th overall in 18:27.36.

Mullins said: “I was able to get to the next checkpoint and confirm with medics that an alarming haematoma wasn’t a crack in the shinbone, then after a couple of hours limping reach my crew and get a compression bandage. From then on, I was able to run normally and was surprised to find, pretty well. The West Highland Way is hard but incredibly rewarding.” Carnegie’s Iona Mackay was another Courier Country local to excel placing 31st overall, fourth woman (21:02.51) with club colleague Derek Fish 24th (20:20.16). 197 finished within the time limit.

Dundee-based Welsh internationalist Kristian Jones (Dundee Hawkhill) posted a personal best for 5,000m winning the British Milers Club race at Loughborough. Jones, the reigning Scottish cross-country champion, clocked 13 minutes 45.25 seconds, outsprinting Norway’s Per Svela (13:45.65) and Portugal’s Rui Pinto (13:46.31) to the finish line to go 7th in the 2018 UK rankings. Evergreen veteran Jo Pavey (Exeter) won the women’s race timed at 15:48.84 ahead of Phillippa Bowden’s (Aldershot Farnham & Dist.) 15:52.36.

Jessica Judd (Chelmsford) headed the women’s 1,500m A race in 4 minutes 10.76 seconds where Fife AC’s Steph Pennycook placed 12th in a season’s best 4:23.28.

UK long jumpers Shara Proctor and Lorraine Ugen dominated their event at the Madrid World Challenge Meeting placing first and second respectively with marks of 6.89m and 6.85m.

Lasswade’s Guy Learmonth finished 8th in the 800m timed at 1 minute 47.17 seconds.

China’s Su Bingtian provided the main highlight of the meeting as he took the men’s 100m in a blistering 9.91 seconds. The 28-year-old regained the Chinese record he had lost barely three days ago when Xie Zhenye clocked 9.97 in Montreuil. He also equalled the Asian record, held by Qatar’s Femi Ogunode.
