Roddy lands novelty title at Monikie competition

-

The Dundee Novelty competition took place on MONIKIE RESERVOIR

with nine boats and 18 anglers.

The total basket was 21 trout for 41lb 6oz.

All competitors get two set casts of flies, which are the only ones they can use on the night, albeit on any fly line.

The winner and holder of the Dundee Novelty Trophy was Roddy McKay with four trout for 7lb 12oz. Roddy found the secret to success was to fish his new Airflo Sixth Sense DI3 fly line and bring the fish up from the depths to his flies.

Second prize and holder of the James D Hardie Memorial cup was to George Potts with three trout at 6lb 2oz.

Monikie, meanwhile, has had a good week, catch wise, with some evening rises being prolific while other evenings are slow to start.

Daytime anglers are still doing well, especially if it is not too windy.

At RESCOBIE LOCH the Gentlemen of Loanhead AC had a great day out on Saturday.

The 12 rods took 30 fish for 63lb 6oz.

The heaviest was 4lb 3oz and there was also a fine brownie at 4lb 4oz.

The Dundee West End visited with 14 rods and took 28 for 54lb 5oz. Best bags for the week among the regulars were Davie Milne, four for 12lb 12oz, Gordon Armstrong, four for 11lb, Harry Gauld, four for 10lb, H Anderson, four for 9lb 8oz and Alec Fyall, four for 8lb.

Rescobie is to host the 10th annual Maggie’s Angling Competition on Sunday July 22 from 10am-4pm. Two-man boats are still available at a cost of £50 per boat. To book a boat phone Rescobie boathouse on 01307 830367. There are quality prizes for top three rods plus heaviest fish. Refreshments before and after the competition are also included.

At LAKE OF MENTEITH the sun has come out again in the past few days, so it is chasing the fish back up into deeper water with Cages and Rookery the favoured areas.

Flies doing well include cat or candy boobies, damsel nymphs, cormorants and diawl bachs.

Bill Ramage was top rod with nine fish on the seventh night of the Fario Fly Boat League. Second was Craig Ingles with eight fish and third was Brian MacKenzie with six.

Heat eight of the Scottish club championship saw 11 teams take part and 134 fish landed.

Top team was Lintrathen FF (McAllister, Anderson and Neri) with 20 fish, second Caley Liners, also with 20, and third was Ayr Travellers FF A with 18.

Top rod of the night was Gary Wilkinson (Cupar AC) with nine fish.

The Lake of Menteith Fisheries’ fly fishing club is called the Cormorants.

Free fishing and boat handling tuition is given from suitably qualified and experienced coach and boat persons (Scottish Anglers National Association Level 2 Coach, Scottish Angler’s Leaders Award and Enhanced Disclosure Scotland).

The second semi-final of the Scottish championships was held at

CARRON VALLEY on Saturday.

In first place with 23 fish for 24lb 10oz was Arthur MacDonald of SPPM AC fishing a Di 3 and four mini. Second was Ronnie Orr of Milngavie AC with 21 for 22lb 7.8oz using a Di 5 with boobies and sparklers and third was Stephen Francis of Househillmuir FF with 15 fish for 16lb 7oz using a fast glass with sparkler boobies and blobs.
