Pensioner airlifted to hospital after A9 crash

ACCIDENT: Lengthy tailbacks after collision involving car and lorry

A senior citizen was airlifted to hospital after a two-vehicle crash on the A9 in Highland Perthshire.

Emergency crews were called to the collision between a car and a lorry just before 8.40am yesterday.

The injured pensioner was trapped in her car and had to be cut free by firefighters.

She was flown by air ambulance to Ninewells Hospital.

Her injuries are not believed to be lifethreatening.

The accident happened near Jubilee Bridge at the Dalguise junction, about a mile north of Dunkeld.

The route was blocked in both directions for about two hours, creating lengthy tailbacks.

Some motorists reported queues stretching back nearly three miles.

Transport giant Stagecoach also warned of significant delays to its service.

A fire services spokesman said four appliances and a “heavy rescue unit” were called to the scene.

He said: “We attended the scene and removed the roof of the vehicle to release a female, who was then passed to the care of the paramedics.”

The road reopened at around 10.30am, although it took some time for traffic to clear.

Last month a 96-year-old died in a three-vehicle accident on the A9 near the same location.

Two people were taken to hospital after another A9 crash involving a car and a lorry, near Dunkeld, in April.

According to the A9 Safety Group, HGVs above seven-and-a-half tonnes are involved in nearly a quarter of all accidents on single carriageways on the A9, yet typically only make up 7% of the traffic.

They are also nearly three times more likely to be involved in an injury accident on single carriageways of the A9 Perth to Inverness route than they are on other Scottish trunk road single carriageways.
