Roadworks shut town’s main street

- PAUL MALIK

Roadworks have caused a headache for residents and business owners in one town after shutting down the main thoroughfare yesterday.

The planned six-week programme of work in Tayport is being carried out by Scottish Gas Networks (SGN).

Maitland Street has been closed as work is conducted between its junctions with Mill Lane and Queen Street.

A second team of engineers is also conducting work on Queen Street, between its junctions with Maitland Street and William Street and into William Street to the junction with Castle Road, with both sections of road also closed.

Part of Reform Street, between its junctions with William Street and Castle Street, is closed and Spearshill Road, between Castle Road and Dougall Street, will be closed for safety.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in place and Tayport Ferryport on Craig Community Council discussed the matter last night. Chairman Colin Veitch said: “Engagement meetings will need to take place to provide feedback, which will be essential, so I urge residents to speak with a member of the community council or their local councillor. We have to make sure people are aware of the road closures.”

It is thought the works could also have an unintended consequence on the judging for this year’s Beautiful Fife competition.

Due to the works, it is likely a minibus for the judges will be unable to carry them on parts of the route due to be assessed.

The Scottish Gas Network (SGN) did not have a representative present at last night’s meeting, but has previously said the works were essential.

Engineering manager Lindsay Taylor said: “We’ve worked closely with the local authorities in planning this work and will be doing everything we can to limit disruption during our essential project.

“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, however the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.

“This means once the work has been completed, Tayport homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”

The work is due to finish by August 14.
