STENHOUSEMUIR 3 MONTROSE 2

Late drama as Warriors sink Montrose at death

-

Stenhousemuir climbed off the bottom of the league thanks to a Mark McGuigan goal in the fourth minute of added time when he dispatched the ball into the net following a mazy run by Conner Duthie.

It was hard lines on a Montrose side who had looked to have secured a draw in the 90th minute when Andrew Steeves fired home.

The Warriors had taken the lead in the 22nd minute through an Alan Cook drive before Christian Antoniazzi capitalised on slack play by Stenhousemuir to stroke the ball home.

The visitors had a great chance to take the lead in the 44th minute when Mark Ferry fouled Danny Cavanagh but Iain Campbell’s spotkick was brilliantly saved by Graeme Smith.

Terry Masson powered a header home before half time but the goal was controversially disallowed.

Montrose’s Ross Campbell said: “With the disallowed goal we struggled with it. It looks as if it’s an off-the-ball thing.

“Great delivery and the guy scored a perfectly good goal and on the back of the momentum we had lost with the missed penalty it was the perfect time to get the goal.”

After the let-offs Stenhousemuir took the lead once again five minutes after the restart when veteran Colin McMenamin scored from close range after being picked out by a Cook cross.

Both sides showed spirit and fight but ultimately McGuigan’s goal was the difference between the teams in a game that could have gone either way.

Campbell was magnanimous in his thoughts, saying: “When you put as much effort and get a goal it’s frustrating.

“Stenhousemuir like us are coming up a division so credit to them for winning the game.

“We rebooted at half-time but never got to the heights of the first half.

“Lots of games have been pretty tight and it’s like playing top of the league teams every week and taking a bit of adjusting.

“We are now a quarter of the way through the season we will have a big review and build on it.”
