Pressley’s reign at Pafos ends

-

Former Hearts and Falkirk manager Steven Pressley could emerge as a candidate for the vacant job at Partick Thistle after being sacked by Cypriot side Pafos yesterday.

The former Dundee United defender was sacked along with his assistant Brian Reid, a former playing colleague from his time at Rangers, following a 3-0 defeat by Nea Salamis yesterday.

Pressley joined Pafos in January and helped them avoid relegation.

However with only one draw and three league defeats so far this season the axe has fallen on the former Scotland defender.

Pafos issued a statement which advised: “Pafos FC has decided to let go head coach Steven Pressley and his assistant coach Brian Reid. Steven was appointed as the main team’s head coach in January 2018 and was warmly welcomed by the players and the fans.

“However, the administration of the club decided that a change in leadership is necessary at this time.

“Pafos has not achieved the level of competitive excellence and the results that were expected in this new season, but we want to emphasise that this decision should not detract from the substantial contribution Steven has made on behalf of Pafos during his tenure.

“Steven brought discipline to the team and we value his input. But now it is time to concentrate on different qualities to continue our way to success.

“We wish Steven and his family nothing but the best and also, we thank his assistant coach as well, for his contributions to our club.’’

Partick sacked manager Alan Archibald after a 2-0 home defeat by Ross County left them eighth in the Ladbrokes Championship.

The 40-year-old has been at Thistle for most of his life as a player, and manager since 2013, when he led the Jags to the top flight.

Thistle have appointed chief executive Gerry Britton, their former striker, as caretaker boss along with head of youth Scott Allison.
