Champion setting his sights on Whistling Straits

-

Eddie Pepperell is targeting winning a major and securing a place on the Ryder Cup team in 2020 following his British Masters success.

The 27-year-old, who recently won at the Qatar Masters, produced a wireto-wire performance in difficult conditions at Walton Heath to move up to seventh in the Race to Dubai standings.

He would have been an automatic pick for this year’s Ryder Cup had he won a tournament in Denmark but he finished down the field and was then not one of Europe captain Thomas Bjorn’s wildcard picks for Paris.

Europe will defend the trophy at Whistling Straits in America next time and Pepperell expects his game to have improved enough to make that team, along with a major title. He said: “Absolutely I should be targeting those things. I think they are achievable, so I’m not putting any pressure on myself on that front.

“There are certain tournaments that are maybe more favourable, maybe more suited, to my style of game but we will see. I think this year would have been premature for me, even though I came close to making the team.

“I have been to Whistling Straits and it would be great to play a Ryder Cup in America as it doesn’t get much tougher than that.”

Pepperell insists he did not play as well as he could have despite a two-shot win at the British Masters and he is looking to improve aspects of his game for the remaining tournaments this year.

He added: “I didn’t feel like I swung the club that well this week.”
